The Indie Hackers Post: “I’ll Work for Free for 2 Months”
The Story
The real breakthrough came when Yannick saw a message on Indie Hackers: “Developer looking for marketing co-founder.” It was Samy Dindane, who had built Hypefury and was making around $500 MRR.
Yannick flew to Paris to meet him for a weekend. He knew nothing about Twitter (had 600 followers, tweeting nonsense). But he knew digital marketing inside out.
He made Samy an offer: “I’ll work for free for 2 months. No backup plan.” He didn’t ask for $10K if things didn’t work out. He didn’t hedge his bets. He went all in. Because he knew he could deliver.
He launched marketing initiatives: SEO strategy, PPC campaigns, expanded affiliate program, new product lines. They didn’t pay themselves for two years. Their first hire was customer service (so they could focus on marketing and development instead of tickets).
They bootstrapped everything. No investors. Just reinvesting profits into growth.
Lesson for Creators
Skin in the game beats every pitch. Yannick didn’t send a resume or a proposal. He offered to work for free with no safety net. This level of commitment eliminates the other person’s risk and proves your confidence in your own abilities. If you’re trying to break into a partnership or a new opportunity, ask yourself: what can I offer that makes the other person’s decision risk-free?
