The 101 Viral Thread Hooks Giveaway
The Story
Yannick created an ebook called “101 Viral Thread Hooks” and gave it away for free on Twitter. The post: “I’ve decided to release it for free. Just comment below with ‘threads’ and I’ll DM you the link.”
This single tactic stacked multiple growth levers:
- The comment requirement boosted the tweet’s engagement algorithmically
- Each comment was public social proof (“this many people want this”)
- The DM created a direct connection with each person
- The ebook download captured an email address
He also launched a free Twitter growth course on Gumroad that got 14,239+ downloads, with each download adding someone to their email list.
Combined with Hypefury’s blog (45K organic monthly visitors), these free resources drove 300-500 new email subscribers every month, building toward the 40K+ subscriber list they have today.
Lesson for Creators
Free doesn’t mean unprofitable. Every free resource is a lead magnet if you design it right. The “comment and I’ll DM you” technique is a multi-layered growth hack: engagement boost + social proof + direct connection + email capture. Create one great free resource and distribute it this way. It keeps working for years.
