Sydney: The Dog Who Changed His Life
The Story
Sam got Sydney, a white pit bull, in sophomore year of college (winter 2010). A friend asked if he could watch someone’s dog who’d been arrested. It was supposed to be two weeks. Six months later, Sam still had him. He named him after Sydney, Australia.
They shared 15 years together across San Francisco, Austin, Brooklyn, and New York. Sam built a motorcycle platform so Sydney could ride to work with him.
The pivotal detail: during one of his drinking nights, Sam got arrested for a DUI while Sydney was waiting at home. That moment, realizing he’d let down the only being who depended on him, triggered his sobriety.
Sam credits Sydney with transforming him “from party boy idiot to a successful and responsible family man.”
Sydney met Sam’s newborn daughter Naomi 10 days before dying. The sole witness to Sam’s full evolution.
Lesson for Creators
Sam’s most emotionally raw piece of writing, and one of his most read, was about his dog dying. Vulnerability connects. The story behind the story (a DUI arrest, a commitment to sobriety, a 15-year journey) is often more powerful than any business insight. Don’t be afraid to show the human side.
