First Dollar Online at 14: MP3 Sites and a Check in the Mail
The Story
In 1998, Yannick was 14 and still in high school. He started building MP3 download websites, back when downloading songs was still legal. The internet was a different world: Altavista and Lycos were the search engines, and you got traffic through methods like “trade traffic” (exchanging visitors between sites).
He earned money from ads on these sites. The payment came as a physical check in the mail that he had to go cash at a bank.
A teenager in Belgium, receiving a check from the internet, before Google even existed. That was the beginning.
Lesson for Creators
You don’t need permission, credentials, or even adulthood to start making money online. A 14-year-old in 1998 figured it out with zero resources and zero guidance. The platforms change (Altavista to Google, checks to Stripe), but the fundamental loop never changes: drive traffic, provide value, monetize attention. The barrier to starting is always lower than you think.
